Spotlight of the Month

Dr. John M. Young, DDS, D.ABDSM, D.ACSDD, D.ASBA
Shore Dental Sleep Care, Central New Jersey

Dr. Young is an Orthodontist and Craniofacial specialist, Board certified in Dental Sleep Medicine.

Our practice specializes in managing sleep apnea in adults and influencing growth and development in children and adolescents to prevent them from having OSA. We have changed people’s lives for the better, having treated thousands of patients.

Favorite success story:

  • • My most rewarding experience was an overseas trip to Guatemala, with a cleft palate team, where we trained local dentists how to diagnose and treat children with OSA and breathing-related issues. We feel most successful when hearing that we have saved marriages or changed a child’s life by treating their sleep-related issues.

Tips to our Success:

  • • My staff and I both have OSA. (Mine was severe at AHI 46). We have worn many of the major appliances, so I can certainly relate to the patient’s experience! We have a great insight into what appliances are successful in treating OSA, and which would be a better option for certain patients. I’ve also found that it is helpful to customize the appliance to the patient’s skeletal pattern (or malocclusion), in order to increase our chances for success and to prevent any complications.
Advice for Treating Sleep in Your Office:

    • • Education! Get board certified.
    • • Treat your staff and have them trained as well as you in OSA and Oral Appliance Therapy.
    • • Get on staff at a hospital or multiple hospitals or sleep lab.
    • • Public awareness campaigns – do one or many.
