Favorite Success Stories:
- • My favorite stories are those where I have reconnected relationships. I have many patients where, due to C-PAP or excessive snoring, they are no longer sleeping together in the same room as their spouse or partner. After wearing their oral appliance for a few nights, they have moved back in the same bedroom and they often tell me I have saved their relationships!
Tips for Treating Patients:
- • Don’t be in a hurry to advance patients very far when making an oral sleep appliance. Conservative advancements (50-60% a patient’s max) at first helps with initial compliance. You’ll have less or almost no muscle and joint pain, this is a key to success.
- • When discussing treatment with the patient, build their confidence. Assure them they will be successful wearing the oral appliance.
- • If you have a moderate or high AHI patient, hold them in the bite position you are going to set their appliance in. Have the patient breathe with their mouth closed and the bite fork in place, then remove and breathe without advancement. The patient will notice the difference and start to gain a great deal of confidence that OSA treatment will work.

Do Sleep Apnea and PTSD Have Overlapping Factors?
Around 8% of the US population will experience PTSD in their life.
So how is sleep apnea related to PTSD in veterans?
Research has shown that there are factors that overlap in both disorders which affect and aggravate each other. Overlapping factors include disturbed sleep in combat, excessive deprivation, fragmented sleep, hyperarousal, and chronic stress. Although all of these symptoms can contribute to the interaction between sleep apnea and PTSD, the main culprits seem to be sleep deprivation and chronic stress.
The important takeaway message is that if you are a veteran suffering from PTSD, it is important to get a screening for sleep apnea. If you have undiagnosed sleep apnea, you could be suffering from symptoms that can be treated.
